#475

April is National Poetry Month and we had originally planned on reading and discussing a selection of poems written by C.S. Lewis.  Our time with The Question of God took longer than planned so poetry had to be pushed to May and combined with May's reading of the Lewis essay "The World's Last Night."  We will discuss both on Monday, May 19th - 6:15pm, meeting in the Conference Room at the library.

What the Bird Said Early in the Year
By C.S. Lewis

I heard in Addison’s Walk a bird sing clear
‘This year the summer will come true. This year. This year.

‘Winds will not strip the blossom from the apple trees
This year, nor want of rain destroy the peas.

‘This year time’s nature will no more defeat you,
Nor all the promised moments in their passing cheat you.

‘This time they will not lead you round and back
To Autumn, one year older, by the well-worn track.

‘This year, this year, as all these flowers foretell,
We shall escape the circle and undo the spell.

‘Often deceived, yet open once again your heart,
Quick, quick, quick, quick! – the gates are drawn apart.’

April is National Poetry Month and we had originally planned to celebrate by reading and discussing a few of C.S. Lewis's poems.  Our viewing and discussion of The Question of God has gone one month longer then planned, so C.S. Lewis the Poet was pushed to May.  Above is one of the poems we will read and I am posting it here because I saw this first flower in my garden make her appearance.
